Michael Schmelling is the author of eight photo books, including The Plan [J+L Books 2009], Atlanta: Hip Hop & The South [Chronicle 2010], Your Blues [The Ice Plant / Skinnerboox 2018] and Rise & Fall [Here Press 2022]. Schmelling's work from The Plan was included in the 2013 ICP Triennial: A Different Kind of Order; his first one-person museum exhibition—Your Blues, a commission from The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago was presented in 2014.

As a graphic designer and editor — working under the name 40 Worth St.— Schmelling has collaborated on over two dozen publications with artists, writers, musicians, and photographers including: The Dennis Hopper Trust; Hilton Als; Sharon Van Etten; Friedrich Kunath; Sara VanDerBeek; Ahndraya Parlato; Richard Maxwell; Amanda Shires; Amen Dunes; and Odd Future.

40 Worth St. Studio takes its name from the building in downtown Manhattan where Schmelling had a studio from 2005–2012. These days, the studio is on the East side of Los Angeles. There were also years/months/days spent in Chicago, Atlanta, and El Paso.
